Backline Live, Guildford

Based in an old railway arch just behind Guildford train station, Backline Live is a new venue which combines studio rehearsal facilities with an entertainment and live music venue. The venue was designed to have an industrial feel, with bare brick walls and visible metalwork, but required a comprehensive system capable of meeting the needs of live performers. The main lighting system comprised of six moving heads, four spots and two washes. With LED units becoming brighter and more reliable, these were the obvious choice for the venue. Combined with a series of traditional parcans, the system can be used to illuminate performers on the stage area, or be used as nightclub style lighting should a dj be playing.

The main centrepeice of the venue is a custom built chandelier. At just over 1.5m in diamter, the chandelier comprises of 48 bottles of Smirnoff Vodka which hang upside down from a metal ring. Each bottle has an RGB LED mounted above it which illuminates the bottle and its contents.

We were contacted by the Revenge and asked to come up with a state of the art lighting system never before seen in Brighton as part of their ongoing renovations of the club. We came up with a design for an LED ceiling which incorporated a series of LED battons down the walls to create an effect which would surround the customers, and by moving the Dj box to the centre of the back wall we could focus the attention on the Dj or performer.

The ceiling contains 1800 individually controlled LEDs from Philips Colour Kinetics range covering an area of 36 square metres. Each side wall of the venue was built out to house 10 flush LED battons, each 1200mm long. The ceiling then extended down behind the newly built Dj box to create a focal point.

An LED staircase system was fitted in the entrance to entice customers into the room, which utilises the same LEDs fitted in the ceiling. We then fitted a computer control system which allowed us to integrate the existing effects lighting system within the venue, so everything can be controlled from the one computer. To top off the new custom built Dj box, two Pioneer CDJ2000 players were fitted.

Most people consider a bowling alley to be a family oriented place with games machines, pool tables, burger bars and kids play areas, but Lava Lanes has strived to offer something different. With a fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar alongside the ten pin bowling, Lava Lanes provides a unique combination of luxury surroundings and entertainment in one.

Showtec was enlisted to run the project from the initial design stages, through to the consruction, decorating and opening of the venue. After many meetings and discussions with the customer, our design team put together a package for the complete project, covering all aspects of the venue. Our construction team then started work on what was then an almost empty shell, with electricians, plumbers and builders all coordinated together by our project manager.

Running striaght through the centre of the building are the four bowling lanes. Being the main feature of the venue, we wanted to add something special to make this stand out from any normal bowling alley. To do this we implemented one of our specialist team to design a video mapping system which would integrate with the bowling machines. Keeping with the theme of the venue, a smouldering volcano was projected above each of the lanes, which erupted when any of the bowlers acheived a strike. Using 4 independant projectors, each lane works separately with triggers from the bowling machines. When any bowler gets a strike, the corresponding volcano erupts, then resets back to the dormant state before the next bowler tries. This gives the customers an extra sense of involvement rather than just a simple scoreboard indication.

A number of impressive custom design features were implemented to add to the overall effect of the venue. In the bowling and the bar areas, two walls were fabricated in a 'wavy' effect, which ripples along their length. Finished in a custom gold and timber finish, each strip was painstaikingly cut to size and hand fitted to the curved surface. Along the ceiling, a row of colour changing LEDs were fitted to shine down onto the walls to add to the effect and to create a subtle chaning mood.

As you walk through the front doors, a selection of image and effect projectors cover the walls in a simulated fire and lava effect, immersing you in the experience of the venue. At the base of the stairs, a mirrored glass box was constructed to house a display of gold bowling pins with colour changing LEDs shining through, creating a stunning effect which welcomes people into the venue.

The sound system was designed to be simple to use, with a good quality sound from aesthetically pleasing speakers. We opted to use the Evid series from EV as they provided a perfect solution to fit the requirements. A combination of Evid 6.2, 3.2 and 12.1 bass bins throughout the venue create a warm sound with the capability of higher volume levels when required. Controlled by a Cloud zone system with wall mount remote controls in each area, the system is simple to use with members of staff easily able to change volume levels and source selection. A series of plasma screens were also added to enable to venue to show either DVD video or Sky TV from one of two boxes, by way of a video matrix switcher.

Overall, Lava Lanes offers a very high standard of entertainment to its customers, with a bowling experience that is second to none. This is a great example of how new design ideas can be put into great effect to produce a simply stunning venue.

Spread over 5 floors, Molton House offers a nightclub, bar and restaurant all in one venue. With plush decor and some great design features, the sound and visual systems needed to be of the highest quality to refect their surroundings. The installtion included Funktion One sound system in the basement club, Bose sound systems on the other floors, fibre optic chandeliers on three floors, plus numerous LED systems including a 'spiders web' installation in the basement!

Starting with the sound system, it was decided that a Funktion One system would be utilised in the basement nightclub area due to its high quality. The design of the Res 2sh speakers fitted in perfectly with the feel of the room, especially after a custom gold paint job! Bass was supplied via one of the immense F221 twin 21" cabinets driven from an MC2 E45 amplifier.

The sound for the ground floors and above needed to be lower volumes which is why we opted for Bose. The Freespace 3 systems were used in the restaurant and private rooms due to their small size, giving high quality sound without imposing large speakers. The hallways, bars and staircases were fitted with Bose DS100 speakers so wherever you are in the venue you get a clean, crisp, high quality sound. A second Dj box was installed on the 1st floor to cater for the upper levels, with sound being routed through a Cloud digital zonign system. This allowed each room to have its own volume control, plus the ability for the customers to select what they were listening to.

On the ground and upper floors, three custom fibre optic chandeliers were created. As you enter the ground floor you are greeted by a flowing 'river' of fibre optic strans fitted with crystals, which runs across the ceiling and down the wall behind the front desk. On the 1st floor, a oval ceiling cutout was filled with fibre optic strands, again fitted with crystals, which bow down into the room to resemble the hull of a boat. The final unit was fitted in one of the private dining rooms. Hanging from the ceiling the fibre optics mirror the shape of the oval table below, with crystals and feathers attached to the tails.

The most impressive part of the lighting system is back in the basement club, where a 'spiders web' of LED strings have been fitted. The LEDs run up the central column and out across the ceiling to the outer walls. The system is run via a computer based system which allows the LEDs to run various patterns and graphics in any colour required.

When we first visited the site for the 107 Club it was simple an empty shell. It was difficult to picture how it would be transformed into a fully functioning nightclub, but after three months of hard work the venue opened its doors to the public with great success.

The brief was straightforward; high quality sound and an impressive lightshow to match.

Starting with the sound, we opted for a Funktion One system. Renowned for their high quality and visually impressive systems, we felt that this would offer the most suitable system for the venue. On the dancefloor the system comprised of four Res2SH speakers flown from the ceiling, with two F221 twin 21” bass bins. The Res2SH speakers offer a fairly narrow dispersion, which allowed us to concentrate the sound on the dancefloor area, without spilling out too much into the bar areas. The speakers were powered by two MC² amplifiers, the E25 and E45. These were in turn controlled by an XTA DP424 system processor and an XTA C2 compressor limiter, with a Formula Sound FF6000 mixer in the Dj box.

The peripheral sound was slightly more complex, with 7 additional separately defined areas. Firstly, there were four individual VIP rooms, each requiring its own volume control. For these a Bose system was specified, giving a high sound quality from compact enclosures. The first three rooms utilised the Bose DS100 surface mount speakers, with the last room having a Bose Freespace 3 system. Each room was also fitted with a Cloud RL1 remote volume control unit, allowing the customers to control the volume in their own room’s independently.

Next were the upstairs and downstairs bars, and the secondary dancefloor. For these areas we opted for a number of EV (Electrovoice) ZX1 speakers. Powered by QSC GX3 and GX5 amplifiers, these speakers offered a perfect solution of good quality but not overpowering sound for the peripheral areas.

 

 

 

 

 

Moving on to the lighting system, we had the challenge of creating something impressive but unique, in order to give the venue a way of standing head and shoulders above its competitors. With its fairly high roof, the 107 Club was a perfect candidate for an LED ceiling. After a few discussions and alterations, it was decided that we would construct the custom LED matrix to run the whole length of the ceiling, and down one of the walls, opposite the Dj box. Covering a total area of 90 square metres, this would provide one of the most impressive nightclub lightshows in the area.

The ceiling itself was made up of 1850 RGB LEDs, covering the 18m long and 5m wide area. Each of the LEDs is individually controllable, allowing us to create an almost infinite array of patters, graphics and effects. Within the area of the LED ceiling, we also fitted a number of conventional nightclub lighting effects to add even more impact to the lightshow. These comprised of 8 Robe ClubSpot 300 CT moving heads, and 8 Martin Atomic 3000 strobes. Also added were two custom UK built 300mW green lasers, a Martin Club Fog system and a Martin AF-1 fan to distribute the smoke. To light the stage area, two Robe ClubWash 300 CT moving heads were fitted, and two additional Robe ClubSpot 300 CTs were placed over the secondary dancefloor. Peripheral LED lighting was also added, with 48 Octostip LED battons placed in the bar area and edging the balcony.

Control for the lighting was provided by a computer based software system, eCue. This gave us the flexibility to program the entire system on the one computer, with different areas being able to be controlled separately. It also gave us the ability to run graphics and low resolution video on the LED ceiling. The DMX was outputted using seven eCue Butler devices, giving us a total of fourteen universes of DMX.

To finish off a visual system was added comprising of three LCD projectors running from a computer loaded with Arkaos Midi. Two custom screens were constructed at the edges of the dancefloor, while a third electrically controlled rear projection screen was suspended at the edge of the dancefloor. This allowed the venue to close off a section of the club by lowering the screen and using it as a divider. As a rear projection screen was used, it allowed customers both sides of the divider to see the visuals and graphics being projected.

Overall, the finished product was just as impressive as we had hoped. All elements worked together to create a complete clubbing experience, with a new high standard being set for what is expected of the late night industry.

Located in the heart of Enfield, Club 108 is a stunning testament to what clubbing is all about. With extremely high standards, the owners have created a lavish venue which offers two floors of music and entertainment. With a Dj on each floor, 108 offers a whole nights entertainment within its doors.

The sound and lighting systems were designed to offer the flexibility of being able to multi-task, with various club nights, fashion shows, corporate events and live acts performing on a regular basis. With high quality Martin Audio and Turbosound speakers leading the way, the system gives a clear but punchy sound, capable of the high volume levels required.

The ground floor dancefloor is centred around the mirrorball sculpture centrepiece, with eight 250w moving heads providing the effects lighting. Upstairs, three Martin Wizard Extremes have been included to provide added energy and speed to the light show. All of this combined with stunning decor and plush furniture creates one of the best atmospheres we have ever experienced in a nightclub!

By transforming an unused basement, the Devonshire Bar & Club has appeared in the heart of Bexhill, giving the taste of a luxury venue never seen beofre in the area.

A small section of the pub was converted into the entrance to the club, with a bar and plush sofas fitted, offering a relaxed and comfortable area for those wanting to take things easy. Follow the staircase downstairs and you are greeted by a stunning room which has been finished to an incredibly high standard.

The main feature of the club is the LED bubble wall which covers almost half of the walls. With a mirrored front, and colour changing LEDs behind, the bubble wall is a stunning feature which adds movement and life to the space. Added to this are two cluster lasers which fill the room with twinkling beams of light, twisting and turning as the music progresses. These lights, combined with the mirrored ceiling, completeley immerse the customers in light and movement, giving the feeling of involvement and enhanced atmosphere.

We were asked to visit Karma Bar in Brighton Marina to design a new visual system to tie in for the re-launch the venue was planning. With the employment of new DJs, the venue wanted to add a system which would be able to display the actions within the DJ box, while also creating a huge focal point with something people had never seen before.

It was decided that a large wooden carving on Karma Brighton's East wall would be the starting point of the system. At nearly 6m wide and 2m high, the carving offered a perfect base for us to work with in creating the fantastic projector video effect.

The whole system would be split into two sections, both based on the carving. The first part was to integrate four plasma screens into the carving. The four windows/cut outs in the carving would be the location of the four screens, but in order to fill these we had to use four 42" plasma screens rotated into portrait to get the best out of them. The carving was removed from the wall and four NEC commercial plasma screen displays were fitted within the wall, located in the exact positions so when the carving was refitted, the screens filled the windows without the bezel being visible. By doing this, when the screens are not active, it becomes very difficult to distinguish them as plasma screens. This was in keeping with the venues requests for the system to be very unobtrusive when not in use.

The screens were then wired back to an 8x8 video matrix switcher which was to be remotely controlled via computer. Four DVD players and four CCTV cameras were then wired in allowing the venue to display DVD images and video during the day, and images of the DJ and crowd during the evening. All the content for the DVDs was created specifically for the venue, and rotated during editing to compensate for the rotation of the plasma screens. By having the matrix switcher computer controlled, it allowed us to create a program which chased the images on the screens, giving them a more fluid, continuous look rather than the same image constantly on each screen as you can see in the image below.

The second phase was the video mapping system. This involved fitting two 3500 ansi lumen projectors to project onto the carving. These were mounted within custom ceiling boxes to keep them hidden. The projectors were then connected up to a computer based graphics system using VGA cables to keep the quality as high as possible. A snapshot image of the carving was then loaded into the system, allowing different parts of the carving to be mapped into the software. This then allowed us to create video and graphics content which could be projected onto specific parts of the carving. By doing this, the carving becomes an interactive projection surface, rather than the normal boring projector screen. By hiding the projectors it gives the impression that during the day the carving is nothing more than a feature on the wall, but at night it appears to quite literally "come alive" as shown in the videos on the left

By combining these two parts, the overall system gives a huge effect. To finish off, we moved the DJ box to in front of the carving, creating a focal point and allowing the new DJ to be shown off to the crowd. The system was programmed to run automatic shows, with the ability for the DJ to trigger specific visuals in time with the music, adding further to the overall impact of the system.
